Carnac and Forteresse

During our three-day trip to Vannes, we paid a visit to a 14th century fort and Carnac. As nothing in the United States is quite that old, this was so cool. Many of you know that I’m not a big fan of history, but this was pretty fascinating for me.

Carnac is Stonehenge’s cousin. There’s a pretty good mile of perfectly lined up rows of towering rocks. It’s a little haunting to walk through aisles of rocks that were for some reason placed in rows some six thousand years ago. Our guide explained many theories ranging from religious ceremony, the marking of important events to magicians or aliens. We will probably never know, but I think it’s just OK to admire the strength and time it must have taken to accomplish something like this.

Forteresse was much the same experience. Although not quite as ancient, it still holds the weight of many centuries. The fort is in pretty good shape considering it’s about six hundred years old, but it’s still pretty sketchy walking up the tiny spiral staircase. Everything has a bit of green moss hanging on to it, so when my camera flashes it looks like something from a scary movie about a sorceress’s lair or something. Bizarre. The rooms are tiny and it doesn’t seem like anyone could ever live here. However, the scenery is pretty cool. It doesn’t seem like this was an intense, armed barrier against an unknown foe. I kept wanting to call it a castle. Far from it!
It was quite the historic day for me who hasn’t even seen the White House in America! And it’s only the beginning of what I’ll see here.
